Morat: How they became the biggest pop band in Latin America

How many of you remember the 2016 cultural week in school? Surely not a lot of people remember, but I do. That day Morat went to our school and gave an incredible concert, but since I hadn't heard of them before, I didn’t enjoy it as I should have. 4 years later, they are well known around the world, constantly on tours in Mexico or Spain. Now, they have sold out the Movistar Arena with tickets around $200,000 pesos twice in a week. Today, many people feel identified with their broken-hearted lyrics and move to the beat of their songs. Today, Morat is a symbol of all failed love stories.

Morat is a Colombian group of 23-year-old guys who have been together since their high school days. In the beginning, their only purpose was to hang out and have a good time: they never imagined their music could touch as many hearts. When they were college students, their first musical goal was to put out a CD. By doing this, they would have something to show and would be able to play in small cafes or bars. Then, they started writing lyrics from the bottom of their hearts. Using their love experiences, the four of them began mixing parts and putting together words. As they realized that music was more than a hobby, they looked for a manager, who made them write their popular song “ Mi Nuevo Vicio” in half an hour. This song is the beginning of their career. Even though no one knew much

about its composers,  it started sounding all over Bogotá, in schools, in parties, in bars. It was everywhere! Due to its popularity, they received a message from Paulina Rubio, telling them she wanted to record their song. Just like that, they signed with Universal and their career took a big step. After spending months singing in Spain, they came out with their first album called “Sobre el amor y sus efectos secundarios”, which includes some of their best-known songs as “Como te atreves” and “Cuanto me duele”. Since then, they haven't stopped. They have produced more albums as well as more hits than we can count and which play all over the radio.

The group has already won multiple prizes and has been nominated for the Latin Grammys. They have sold out big theaters such as Mexico’s National Auditory and Royal Theater. Some of their singles have been certified Gold or Platinum. They have made collaborations with other well-known artists as Paty Cantú, Juanes, and Andrés Cepeda. Throughout the years they have grown and learned a lot. Just being in their 20’s, Morat is the biggest pop band in Latin America and Spain. They have certainly come a long way since the day they stepped foot into our coliseum.
